Square Dancing
Most people begin square dancing by joining a beginner class where they learn the basic calls one step at a time. At first, it can feel like learning a new language—terms like do-si-do, promenade, and allemande left are unfamiliar, and dancers have to think about each move as the caller explains it. But classes are designed to be relaxed and supportive. The caller teaches each call gradually, and dancers learn by practicing together, laughing at mistakes, and trying again. Before long, beginners start to recognize patterns, respond more naturally to the caller’s voice, and gain confidence moving around the square with the music.
After completing the class, new dancers join regular club dances where they mix with more experienced dancers who help guide them along the way. The calls come more smoothly, the patterns become familiar, and the dancing begins to feel less like following instructions and more like enjoying the rhythm and teamwork of the square. Over time, dancers become comfortable in almost any square, dancing easily with different partners and sometimes helping newer dancers learn the basics. What begins as curiosity quickly becomes a fun, social activity—and many dancers find themselves part of a welcoming community that keeps them dancing for years.
Round Dancing
Square dancing and round dancing are both forms of social dancing often enjoyed at the same events, but they work in different ways. In square dancing, four couples form a square and follow instructions from a caller who announces the dance movements as the music plays. Dancers don’t memorize routines; instead, they respond to the caller’s calls, which makes every dance a little different. Round dancing, on the other hand, is danced by couples moving around the floor in a circular pattern, similar to ballroom dancing. The steps are choreographed in advance and usually cued by a leader who announces the next figure so dancers can stay together with the music.
Getting started with either style is easy because most clubs offer beginner lessons. New square dancers typically take a class that introduces the basic calls and movements step by step, while beginning round dancers learn simple rhythms such as two-step or waltz along with the basic figures for each dance. No previous dance experience is needed, and singles, couples, and friends are all welcome. Many dancers enjoy learning both styles, since square dancing emphasizes teamwork and quick patterns while round dancing focuses on smooth partner dancing and musical expression. Together they create a fun, social activity that people of all ages can enjoy. 💃🕺
